BUSH BEAUTIES EXHIBITION

Kate Owen and Karen Backus are rural artists popping up in Brisbane with their BUSH BEAUTIES exhibition.

Opening Tuesday 20th to Sunday 25th of August at Latrobe Art Space in Paddington the week will hold some fun and creative events.

We are collaborating with two local Brisbane businesses to create a wonderful cactus + floral installation to be the feature of a Sketch and Sip event on the night of the 21st of August where you can sip, nibble and draw with a bit of guidance from us plus chat all things prickly and blooming with Monique and Elle. Tickets to this event can be booked on eventbrite.

Love you to join us for a celebratory opening night on Thursday the 22nd. No need to rsvp, just turn up with a friend and enjoy the collection and the company. The gallery is open from 10-5 daily and we would love you to visit and connect with us and our work.

VIP subscribers will receive first access to the work on Monday 19th.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION..

Kate Owen and Karen Backus are girls from the bush. With artistic pursuits in common they formed a friendship being neighbours in rural Northern NSW. Karen currently works from her home studio in Ashmore QLD and Kate from her custom-built studio at home on their property near North Star.

With this collection they share their passion for all things that grow wildly with recent and new paintings, ceramics, prints, cards and textiles in a colourful showcase of joyful creativity.

Karen is inspired by patterns and wildlife from the bush. From observations of her everyday surroundings in a rural environment she celebrates these bush beauties as heroes that tell a story of the familiar. Her work in acrylic, watercolour, pencil and ceramic is detailed and represents the intricacies of each beautiful part of the subject, giving us a delightful way to see the things nature provides.

Kate interprets the shapes and colours she absorbs from her surroundings into expansive gestural marks in colours that make her heart sing.  Using a mix of acrylic, oil sticks and collage she intuitively creates semi abstract paintings. Large cacti in all their sculptural glory combined with the beauty of a wildflower amongst the weeds and brambles and the sheer joy of a sunflower. These works remind us that there is beauty to be had in all stages of life. Often the things that grow wildly are the most resilient, from this we can learn to water ourselves with freedom and less expectation.
